| Local stores offer a fairly good selection of cameras, however, you will find
that most of them will sell you the item at full retail price. If you are
looking to save around 20% off retail, you will want to shop online.
As always, let the buyer beware. A slew of shady retailers has appeared who
may seem to have the best prices, but it is due to one or more of the following:
- They sell you the camera without accessories. You will receive the
camera and wonder why there is no battery included. Turns out the store opened
the original box, took the items out, and now wants to sell them to you for
double the price. Some stores will actually print in the description that the
battery is not included. What you need to be looking for is the phrase
all manufacturer supplied accessories included. Only then can you be
certain that you're getting all you should.
- They won't sell the camera unless you purchase an accessory kit.
You're trying to buy a camera but when you add it to the shopping cart it says
it's out of stock. However, if you buy the camera bundled with an (always
overpriced) accessory kit, it's magically available.
- Version 2 of the latter scam is that you're able to buy the camera, but
the will send you an e-mail requesting you to confirm that you're the actual
credit card holder. When you call they will try to sell you an (overpriced)
accessory package. If you decline, they will now tell you that the camera will
take an extra 3 weeks to ship. Cancel the order at this point. Do not deal
with these people. They may try to intimidate you with trying to charge you a
cancellation fee. Tell them you will do a chargeback and do it if they do
charge your card.
So where does this leave you? Make sure you check out people's experiences on
the reseller review sites. The camera dealers
I have had positive experiences with so far are
www.abesofmaine.com and
www.beachcamera.com. They have had
consistently low prices, are not running any scams and ship promptly.
